Frequently asked questions

Who is suitable for treatment?

Osteopathy is for everybody from babies to the very old and can help the very fit and infirm alike. Age is not a barrier to receiving osteopathic treatment. We tailor the treatment to suit your individual needs. Because most people suffer at some stage with back pain and neck pain treating these conditions represents over half our work load.

What to expect on your first visit

The Osteopath will take a full case history involving your presenting complaint questions on your general health lifestyle and past medical history.

This is followed by a physical examination when the osteopath will assess you. They will then arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan. Most problems are successfully treated within 2 to 4 visits.

What will I need to wear?

For a comprehensive osteopathic examination it is often necessary to undress down to your underwear. If you feel uncomfortable with this please feel free to bring a pair of shorts and T-shirt.

What does treatment involve?

Osteopathic techniques used normally involve massage stretching and manipulation. In general the treatment does not hurt there may be aching afterwards especially if the problem is severe or longstanding. This normally subsides very quickly.

Is it necessary to see my GP first?

Many patients are now referred by their doctor particularly those suffering back pain and neck pain but it is not necessary to visit them first since all osteopaths are now regulated under law by the General Osteopathic Council GOsC.

We will liase with your doctor if necessary but only with your consent.

What is the difference between an Osteopath and a Chiropractor?

Chiropractic treatment is focused primarily on manipulation of the spine whereas osteopathic treatment employs a wider range of techniques overall such as stretching articulation and mobilisation.

Traditionally both Osteopaths and Chiropractors come from the same begginings in 19th century USA. Over the years both Osteopathy and Chiropractic have evolved but still share many similarities. In more recent times many Chiropractors have adopted a new treatment approach involving maintenance visits to maintain your back. This Chiropractic approach suits some people but does involve more treatment visits and ultimately the cost is greater.
Osteopaths tend to find it fix it and leave it alone. Osteopaths do offer a maintenance service but unlike Chiropractors this is at the patients request and only if absolutely necessary. For more information on Chiropractors go to
